Day 4
We awoke to rain this
morning but by the time we
were on the trail it had turned into another
beautiful day. Our path took us
through Harlan. It was not on our itinerary
but the camp was beautiful and the staff
was very friendly. They offered us the chance to
do the program and who could resist
shotgun shooting.
This was the first time
we bumped into our sister
crew from Virginia. They were taking the opportunity
to dry our their gear from the rain this morning.
First stop was the
reloading cabin for some
basics in reloading.
We each made five 12
gauge shells and
were off to the range to shoot them.
After some safety and
range rules we
were ready to test our skills.
Everyone did great!!
Back at camp we decided
to eat lunch
before we hit the trail again. The guys below found
a rock to eat on to protect them from the chip monks.
Those guys from Virginia
had too much energy
for us. Baseball at 7000 feet was more that
we were up for.
Next was a hike up a 4WD
trail that about
wore us out. We stopped for some lunch and a sock swap.
The scenery was already starting to change.
Our next campsite was
Devils Wash Basin.
It was very beautiful but the water was was not usable.
After supper we took the
time to have a
birthday party. Kurtis turned 18 today. What a great
place to celebrate. As you know a Scout is always prepared.
Our Ranger had got a hold of two pound cakes and
a can of pie filling for the occasion. Even the weather
cooperated. It stopped raining and presented us with
a double rainbow. Derek and Mr. Litherland both
decided they like rainbows. A theme we would
hear many times over the next 10 days.
Happy 18th Birthday
Kurtis.
Can we have some too?
